Two years ago, "GTM Engineer" was a job title you'd find on exactly one company's careers page. Today, 139 companies are hiring for it simultaneously. It's still small — but the trajectory is the same one FDE had in 2023.

What is a GTM Engineer?

GTM (Go-To-Market) Engineer is what happens when you apply software engineering discipline to the revenue stack. The job: build and operate the technical systems that power sales and marketing — CRM integrations, data enrichment pipelines, outbound automation, intent signal processing, product-led growth infrastructure.

It's not a Sales Engineer (who demos the product to prospects). It's not a Growth Engineer (who optimises the product's acquisition funnel). GTM Engineering is internal-facing: you're the engineer that makes the sales and marketing team measurably faster and more data-driven.

The AI dimension is significant. LLMs for personalised outreach at scale, AI-powered lead scoring, automated prospect research, intent signal extraction from unstructured data — GTM Engineers are the people who build these systems and make them actually work in production. Clay, Brex, Toast — the companies pioneering AI-native GTM are all in the top 10 hirers.

Small in absolute numbers, but 139 companies competing for a title that barely had a name two years ago is a strong early market signal. The FDE niche looked similar in early 2024.

Clay at 4 is interesting — Clay is itself a GTM platform (data enrichment, AI-powered outreach), so their GTM Engineers are both internal practitioners and implicitly product-dogfooders. Brex and Toast represent the B2B SaaS category: companies with large sales motions that have operationalised GTM engineering as a competitive advantage.

What they pay

Of 173 roles, 84 (48.6%) have a published salary range — the highest disclosure rate of any niche we track. Among USD roles:

  • Median: $164,375/year
  • 25th percentile: $150,000
  • 75th percentile: $185,625

$164k is below the median for pure engineering roles, which reflects that GTM engineering is still being positioned partially as a "RevOps" function (lower comp band) rather than a software engineering function (higher band). As the discipline matures and the market recognises the engineering depth required, expect this to rise. The narrow spread ($35k) indicates a market that's still in price discovery — not yet enough data points to see the full range.

What this tells us about the GTM Engineering market

1. The 48.6% salary disclosure rate is the highest we track. Companies hiring GTM Engineers tend to be B2B SaaS companies with structured compensation bands and active competition for technical talent. They publish salaries because it works.

2. The market is in early-adopter phase. 139 companies means this is real, not a fringe title — but it's still early enough that being in the top 10% of GTM Engineering candidates is achievable with 1-2 years of focused work. The people building expertise in this discipline now will be in senior positions when the market is 5x larger.

3. Clay and the AI-native GTM stack are the technical frontier. If you're evaluating GTM Engineering roles, the most technically interesting work is at companies building AI-powered GTM tooling (Clay, Profound) or at companies aggressive enough to build custom AI systems on top of those tools (Brex, Toast). Standard CRM integration work is the commodity end.

4. The comp will reprice upward. $164k median today. As companies realise that a good GTM Engineer can 3-5x the productivity of an SDR team, the role will be treated as strategic engineering rather than supporting RevOps. The repricing is already underway at AI-first companies.
